Activities, including traditional music and dance, drama and comedy will be on display at various venues in the capital city over the President’s Day holidays.
It will be part of the National Heritage Month, which will culminate with an awards presentation ceremony on July 22, during which best performers in the various categories will receive prizes.
The event will be graced by President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama.
Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Mrs Gladys Kokorwe said the aim of dedicating July as National Heritage Month was to encourage Batswana to celebrate their heritage and culture, as well as to appreciate the things that make them a nation.
The minister urged Batswana to be proud of their culture, heritage, history and achievements, adding that it was her ministry’s mandate to promote, nurture, preserve and showcase arts and culture in the country.
Ms Kokorwe noted that performers who had been lined-up for the long weekend in Gaborone were selected from 12 mini festivals that were staged throughout the country.
She said drama, comedy and poetry competitions will be held at Maitisong today, while contemporary music competitions will be held at Tsholofelo Park tomorrow. Sunday activities will include a church service at Boipuso Hall and traditional song and dance competitions at Sir Seretse Khama Barracks. |
