In August, headline inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 7.2 percent. Although down 0.3 percent from 7.5 percent in July, it remained above the upper limit of the Bank of Botswana inflation objective for 2007 of 4 – 7 percent. This decline in inflation was due to stable or falling prices across a range of commodity groups, including clothing and footwear (-2.7 percent), communication (-1.2 percent) and recreation and culture (-1.7 percent). These were, however, partially offset by price rises elsewhere, the most significant of which were food (0.8 percent), furnishing and household equipment (1.3 percent), transport (0.8 percent) and restaurants and hotels (1.7 percent). By tradeability, inflation for tradeable goods and services was 8.0 percent, down from 8.8 percent in July, while non-tradeables inflation rose by 0.1 percent from 4.8 percent to 4.9 percent.
The trimmed mean measure of core inflation remained unchanged from July at 6.8 percent, while inflation excluding administered prices rose from 6.0 percent to 7.2 percent.
